We regularly hear the words ‘stressed’ and ‘work’ in the same sentence, but what does it mean? Find out how the Health and Safety Executive define stress in the workplace and how you can spot the signs

The UK's Health and Safety Executive defines stress as ‘the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressures or other types of demand placed on them’.

This definition suggests what might cause stress to one person may not cause stress to another. In fact research into eustress suggests we each have a level of stress that is motivating for each of us. So it is important to note that stress is a unique experience.

The theme for this year’s International Stress Awareness Week is Working Together to Build Resilience and Reduce Stress.

One way that we can all work together to reduce stress in the workplace is to notice the signs of stress in ourselves and others.

For individuals

Stress may manifest as;

  • mood swings
  • being withdrawn and not enjoying things previously enjoyed
  • loss of motivation, commitment and confidence
  • increased emotional reactions – being more tearful, sensitive or aggressive
  • take more time off
  • arrive for work later
  • be more twitchy or nervous

In teams or organisations

Stress may manifest as;

  • arguments
  • higher staff turnover
  • more reports of stress
  • more sickness absence
  • decreased performance
  • more complaints and grievances

Next steps

Communication is key if you identify signs of stress in yourself or others. If you notice signs of stress in yourself, speak to your manager or a colleague for support. If you notice signs of stress in others then do not be afraid to check in with them and offer to listen.
