Making kindness the norm

Be kind with one small gesture of kindness each day.

Take a moment and ask yourself: 'What would it feel like to live in a world where kindness is the norm?'. How would that look like? And what would you do to contribute to it?

Would you give compliments more often? Help others in distress? Donate to those less fortunate than you? Listen attentively? Pay someone else's coffee? Smile at strangers?

Kindness is any positive action that makes someone else feel better than before.

The list of small things we can do to show gratitude & kindness to those around us is endless. These are commonly called 'random acts of kindness'.

The words "Random, Kindness & Senseless Acts of Beauty" written on paper, in cursive

The term is attributed to Anne Herbert who wrote the phrase 'practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty' on a restaurant placemat in 1982.

The idea is to spontaneously carry out selfless acts of kindness or helpfulness, whether that is towards someone you know or a complete stranger. These can be small or big and are committed with no apparent ulterior motive.

Why being kind is not only good for others

As the saying goes, “if you want to feel good, do good”.

And you have probably experienced this before. It feels great if someone smiles back at us. If they thank us for what we have done for them, as small or big as that act might have been.

But did you know there are scientifically proven benefits of being kind? For example, research has linked practising kindness to decreased stress, increased life expectancy and being happier.
